Shaun White misses out on gold
For the first time in a very long time, Shaun White will not medal at a Winter Olympics. Despite being a heavy favorite, he stumbled in his two runs, ending up in fourth place with Switzerland's Yuri Podladchikov ending up in first place. White has been the most dominant snowboarder of all time, winning gold medals at the 2010 and 2006 games and taking home at least one gold medal in every Winter X Games save one since 2003. His dominance wasn't going to last forever, but seeing an Olympic halfpipe podium without him in the middle is still a jarring sight.
Winter X Games
The 2014 Winter X Games have kicked off in Aspen with a key person missing: Snowboarding legend Shaun White will not compete after a week of back-and-forth on the issue. White said that he regretted not being able to give his full attention to the X Games, although he does plan on competing in the Sochi Olympics in two weeks. The X Games will miss White, but there are still plenty of tricks, races and photo finishes to keep fans occupied for the event's three-day duration.
