Chicago swept the MLB All-Star Game Final Vote, with the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo and White Sox's Chris Sale each earning enough fan votes to play in the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday in Minneapolis.

How did they do it? Sure, perhaps it's because each player deserved to be All-Stars based on their on-field performance (Sale especially). Or it could be they were pushed through via heavy (and often clever) use of social media, via the hashtags #VoteRizzo and #TargetSale, with each tweet containing said hashtags counting as an official vote for the player.

Check it out:

(Note: Chef Morimoto and LaRoyce Hawkins indeed retweeted the Sox.)

Opening day sees first replays

Monday was a historic Major League Baseball opening day, and not because the defending champion Boston Red Sox lost. It featured the first uses of MLB's new extended replay system, in which a large number of calls can be challenged. The first attempt came in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs; there, Chicago manager Rick Renteria disputed a double-play call, but it was upheld. The first successful challenge came from Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, who prompted a Ryan Braun infield single to be overturned in the Milwaukee Brewers' 2-0 victory. How do you feel about the new system?

Why does the Cubs' new mascot look like he's sorry? Mascots are supposed to look like a bizarro conception of hip and sassy -- one eyebrow raised, a smirk, maybe a pair of sunglasses. This guy, the first mascot in Cubs history, just looks vaguely apologetic, like he's holding up a baseball and saying "I have no idea what to do with this." Much like the real-life Cubs team, only more on the nose.

Here's a sampling of what readers had to say in our Facebook conversation on the story:

Should the Cubs have fired Sveum?

Dale Sveum is out as Cubs manager after a 127-197 record over the past two seasons. Sveum wasn't given much to work with in the first place, but the team's re-building process never really got started during his tenure, and prospects like Starlin Castro seemed to have their development stall. Joe Girardi's name has been tossed around as a potential replacement, but will he leave the Yankees for Chicago?
