MLB story lines: Which NY stadium is better?
|
One was the House that Ruth Built. The other was built on top of a landfill.
In terms of reputation, Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium were never quite on the same level. They do share one distinguishing characteristic, however, in that both are things of the past, replaced by newer and swankier digs.
For starters, both stadiums hold fewer people than their predecessors, with more leg room and more amenities. New Yankee Stadium is keeping the exact dimensions of its hallowed ancestor, while Citi Field is deeper in left- and right-center and shallower down the foul lines. The Yankees are keeping their old monument park, while the Mets have no such historical remnant from Shea Stadium to place in Citi Field. Neither team made the playoffs last season, so fans hope a change of scenery will do some good.
Which team's stadium would you like to visit, SportsNation?
Tim Kurkjian: "The home clubhouse at the new Yankee Stadium is enormous, significantly bigger than the one at the old Yankee Stadium. That's good. It needs to be as large as possible to accommodate all the talent, the egos, the money and the pressure that will be in that room."

Yankees will be must-see TV
Peter Keating: "...in 2008, the Mets traded for Johan Santana, and spent more on players than they did in 2007. But the team also had higher revenues -- we don't know much more they took in, but attendance was up by nearly 200,000. And this season, the Mets will have even higher revenues when the club moves into Citi Field, without spending appreciably more on payroll."

Money, Madoff and the Mets
Jim Caple: How the Yankees contact their ticket buyers:
"Also, thanks to high demand, your ticket price has increased slightly, from $60 per seat to $170 per seat, plus a $12.50 convenience fee per ticket, a $5.95 service charge per ticket, city and state taxes of 18 percent, a luxury tax of 8.5 percent, $10 for postage ($50 for delivery this season) and a onetime handling fee of $110, bringing your 20-date partial season-ticket plan to $9,695.57. Your bill is already 60 days past due and therefore includes a 15 percent late fee of $1,454.34, bringing the grand total for the 20 dates to $11,149.91."
