1974 N.C. State Wolfpack
This team was an offensive juggernaut, averaging 91.4 ppg. The Wolfpack were led by all-world forward David Thompson's 26.0 ppg. They ran through the ACC regular season undefeated for the second season in a row, and their only loss came in the third game against perennial power UCLA. But N.C. State still finished 30-1, avenging the loss in the national semifinals, with the Wolfpack fighting back from a seven-point deficit in the second overtime to win, 80-77. The national championship game was not nearly as exciting as N.C. State won its first national title with a 76-64 win over Marquette.

The classic against UCLA is not even remembered as the greatest game N.C. State played that season. That distinction belongs to the ACC Tournament championship game, where N.C. State outlasted Maryland, 103-100, in overtime in what many call the greatest game in college basketball history. With no at-large bids to the NCAA tournament at the time, the loser of that game went home with no shot at a national title. Tommy Burleson and Thompson were determined not to let that happen. The two combined for 67 points on 28-of-49 shooting, leading their team to an ACC title and an NCAA Tournament berth.

Individual awards were plentiful for this team. Head coach Norm Sloan was AP National Coach of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year. Thompson was AP National Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, All-ACC tournament first team and Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Burleson was second team All-ACC, MVP of the ACC tournament and NCAA All-Final Four first team. An impressive resume for an imposing team.
