No. 9 Georgia

This football crazy state didn't get a team until the Falcons landed in the NFL in 1966. Fans saw one winning season in the 1980s before colorful coach Jerry Glanville brought back the black jerseys in 1990. Among the flashier moves, defensive back Deion Sanders signed a baseball contract and played for both the Falcons and Braves on Oct. 11, 1992. Coach Dan Reeves, who took the team to its first and only Super Bowl, didn't last long into the Michael Vick era. Hall of Fame tackle Rayfield Wright was born in Griffin and played at Fort Valley State.

Tailback Frank Sinkwich also grabbed the trophy in 1942 for an 11-1 Rose Bowl winning team. coaches like Pop Warner, Wally Butts and Vince Dooley helped put the Bulldogs on the college football map. Georgia Tech was the first school to win all four major bowls — Rose, Sugar, Orange and Cotton — and also has a share of four national titles.

HIGH SCHOOL
No. 4 Georgia

There's little debate about the top three states, and we think Georgia is the best of the rest. Quarterback Fran Tarkenton went to Georgia, and cornerback Mel Blount was born in Vidalia. The Peach state has 11 ESPN 150 players this year and had 12 last year. Spring 2006 DI signees: 143. Fall 2006 high school football teams: 369.
