In case you didn't know, Kansans have no indigenous pro teams (the Chiefs play in Kansas City, MISSOURI). Running back Gale Sayers and quarterback John Hadl were Jayhawks, while quarterback Lynn Dickey from Osawatomie and linebacker Gary Spani played for the Wildcats. Eagles defensive end Darren Howard is among the current K-State players in the NFL.

Aggieville hasn't been the same since Bill Snyder arrived in Manhattan in 1989, turning around one of the most woeful teams in all of college football and taking the Wildcats to 11 straight bowl games from 1993 to 2003. John Outland, watching practice at Kansas in the 1890s, played football for the first time. The Outland Trophy, annually awarded to the nation's top interior lineman, bears his name. The Jayhawks' greatest, or most infamous game, might be the 1968 Orange Bowl, lost when Penn State got a second shot at an extra point because Kansas had 12 men on the field.

Kansas' talent helps feed two Division I programs, Pittsburg State -- a top Division II program -- and the Jayhawk Community College Conference, one of the nation's best. Kansas City, Kan., and Wichita have the deepest talent pool. The Sunflower State scores points for being the home of backs John Riggins (Centralia) and Barry Sanders (Wichita) and all-around athlete Jim Thorpe (Haskell Institute). Spring 2006 DI signees: nine. Fall 2006 high school football teams: 360.
