Islanders take Tavares with No. 1 pick

MONTREAL -- The New York Islanders kept everyone guessing, including John Tavares himself, right up until they made the high-scoring center the No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft.

The Islanders chose Tavares, an 18-year-old junior star with the London Knights, with the first overall pick ahead of 6-foot-6, 220-pound Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman, the top-ranked European prospect.

The Tampa Bay Lightning took Hedman and the Colorado Avalanche followed with forward Matt Duchene, the first three selections going as expected.

Rangers retire Graves' No. 9

NEW YORK -- Adam Graves' greatness isn't measured in numbers -- although it could be.

It isn't about his grit on the ice or his unfailing dedication to his team, and more importantly his teammates -- although it could be.

If he were asked to describe what he does best, Graves' answer would be about how he is a people person and how he strives to make the community better. Not because he was a great hockey player, but because the teachings of humility and caring instilled by his parents are the very things that power his days.

Adam Graves became the sixth Ranger to have his number retired by the club.

For that, as much as his vast contribution to the New York Rangers' long-awaited Stanley Cup championship team in 1994, is why his No. 9 was retired to the Madison Square Garden rafters Tuesday night.
