History: After taking a year to rebuild historic Soldier Field (during which time the team played home games at Memorial Stadium in Champaign), the Bears christened the new stadium in September 2003. The Bears' first season at the old Soldier Field on the shores of Lake Michigan was in 1971, after spending 50 seasons at Wrigley Field. They played 31 seasons there before the big overhaul. Today there are 5,000-some fewer seats than in the Bears' old home, and with a capacity of 61,500 Soldier Field now is the league's smallest venue. Soldier Field originally opened in 1924 as 45,000-seat Municipal Grant Park Stadium. Extra points if you knew the first football game played on its field, in November 1924, featured Notre Dame and Northwestern. (The Irish prevailed 13-6.) Three years later the all-time collegiate attendance record of 123,000 and change was established at the stadium when Notre Dame beat Southern Cal in a 7-6 barnburner.

Directions: From I-55: Take I-55, the Stevenson Expressway, northbound to Lake Shore Drive/Highway 41 North. Take Lake Shore Drive north to the 18th Street exit. From I-290: Take I-290, the Eisenhower Expressway, east to Congress Parkway. Take Congress Parkway to Columbus Drive. Turn right and take Columbus Drive south to the 18th Street exit. From I-90/94: Take I-90/94, the Dan Ryan Expressway, north to the Lake Shore Drive/22nd street exit. Stay to the right and exit to Lake Shore Drive. Take Lake Shore Drive/Highway 41 north to the 18th Street exit. From I-94: Take I-94, the Kennedy Expressway, south to the Congress Parkway exit. Follow Congress Parkway to Columbus Drive. The Soldier Field box office is open only on game days; will call is located outside of Gate 10 and opens two hours prior to kickoff. Accessible seating is available. Umbrellas, cans, bottles, cameras and recording devices are not permitted inside the stadium. Smoking is not permitted inside or outside the stadium. Children shorter than 32 inches receive complimentary lap passes; strollers are not permitted inside the stadium. Bags larger than 8x11x12 inches are prohibited, as are coolers, ice chests and noisemaking devices.
