History: Though originally built for baseball, there have been 16 other sports and competitions played at Tropicana Field, which originally was named the Florida Suncoast Dome and later became known as the Thunderdome. The facility was renamed Oct. 4, 1996, in accordance with a naming rights agreement between the Rays and Tropicana Dole Beverages North America. Tropicana Field closed in October 1996 for a 17-month, $85 million renovation that included adding 319,000 square feet of space. The roof of the dome is lit orange after a Rays win. Unique to the stadium are a touch tank of live rays for fans to feed (free), the Ted Williams Museum & Hitters Hall of Fame (also free for fans attending games) and a cigar bar.

Soak up the scene:
This domed stadium in downtown St. Petersburg may be the antithesis of the classic ballpark, but at least the locals have a winning team on the field for the first time. The tilted roof is lit orange after a Rays win and there are live rays swimming in a tank in the outfield, which is worth a look. And a good sports bar, Ferg's, is close by. Directions:
Topicana Field is located directly east of I-275 in St. Petersburg. I-275 is the main interstate highway that runs north and south through Clearwater and St. Petersburg. Tampa International Airport feeds directly onto I-275. The dome is visible from the highway. I-375 and I-175 both veer off of I-275 and feed into Tropicana Field. Follow the signs for parking. From Tampa (north): Take I-275 South and follow the signs to Exit 10. From St. Petersburg (south): Take 1-275 North to Exit 10 and follow the signs. From points north and east: South on I-275 to Exit 9. To avoid traffic, take exits 19, 17, 14, 13, or 12 and head south on 16th Street Martin Luther King (9th Street) or 4th Street. From Clearwater/N. Pinellas: South on McMullen Booth Road or US 19, proceed east to I-275 south, or less congested alternatives of 16th Street, Martin Luther King (9th Street) or 4th Street. From points south: North on I-275 to Exit 9. To avoid traffic, take Exit 6 to 22nd Avenue South and head north on 16th Street, Martin Luther King (9th Street) or 4th Street. From South Pinellas beaches: Take Treasure Island or Pasadena Avenue to 1st Avenue South or take the Pinellas Bayway to I-275 northbound.

Parking:
Three parking lots (1, 6A and 7A) offer disabled parking spaces just outside the gates, with the majority of the spaces located in lots 6A and 7A.
