Saints upset Bears for NFC crown
Updated: January 19, 2007 3:59:49 PM PST
The Saints pulled off the road upset to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in their history, continuing a dream season that has seen them far exceed expectations.
Drew Brees and Reggie Bush -- both newcomers to the 2006 Saints -- connected on a six-yard touchdown toss with 4:16 left to give New Orleans the winning points. Trailing by three, the Bears still had ample time to drive for a tying field goal or even a winning score, but Rex Grossman threw his second interception of the game and the Saints then killed the clock to secure the win.
Grossman got Chicago on the board first with a 12-yard pass to Bernard Berrian in the first quarter, but New Orleans got a field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 midway through the second quarter, and then mounted a 10-play, 74-yard drive that ended in a Deuce McAllister 17-yard TD scamper with three minutes left in the first half.
Trailing 10-7 at the break, Chicago moved the ball well to open the third period, but Grossman's first interception killed the drive. After New Orleans punted, the Bears came back to take the lead on a Thomas Jones 29-yard run. From there, the defenses took over, and neither team pierced the 40-yard-line of their opponent until the Saints put together their final scoring drive, going 69 yards in eight plays to set up Bush's winning touchdown.
