Rams lose commanding lead, fall to Bengals in OT
Cincinnati's Glenn Holt returned the opening kickoff of overtime 94 yards for the game-winning touchdown to lead the Bengals to a 34-28 win over St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome. Minutes earlier, the Rams sent the game into overtime with a kickoff return of their own, a 99-yard dash to the end zone by Marques Hagans with only 29 seconds left in regulation.
St. Louis (3-10) held what appeared to be a commanding 21-3 lead entering the fourth quarter after two earlier touchdown runs by running back Steven Jackson and a 22-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Torry Holt. The Bengals (5-8) stormed back with 25 fourth-quarter points behind the strong arm of quarterback Carson Palmer.
Palmer connected with wide receiver Tab Perry for a 16-yard touchdown, then hit running back Rudi Johnson out of the backfield for a successful 2-point conversion. After regaining possession on the first of Rams quarterback Gus Frerotte's two fourth-quarter interceptions, Palmer needed just four plays to find wide receiver Chad Johnson for a 1-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Rams lead to 21-18. On their next possession, the Bengals tied the score at 21-21 on a 51-yard field goal by kicker Shayne Graham with 2:22 remaining in regulation. Following another Frerotte interception, Palmer connected with Chad Johnson again for a touchdown, this one from 29 yards.
Palmer threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns on the day, and Rudi Johnson added 138 yards on the ground. Jackson led St. Louis with 72 yards rushing.
