Storm sign Chones; Edwards announces retirement
SEATTLE -- The Seattle Storm on Saturday signed free-agent center Kaayla Chones to a contract, one day after veteran Simone Edwards announced her retirement.
The 6-foot-3 Chones has career averages of 1.7 points and 7.0 minutes in two WNBA seasons with Washington. Her best statistical year came in 2004 when she played in 13 games while averaging 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds.
On Friday, Edwards, 32, the team's sole remaining original member, opted to retire.
"It's just sad," Storm coach Anne Donovan told The Seattle Times. "It saddens me to lose a great person. And it's very difficult because of her history with the franchise and the person she is and how loved she is by all of us. It was a difficult conversation."
Edwards ranks third in Storm career rebounds with 625 and fourth in points with 936. She averaged 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds in six seasons.
She will play in the Caribbean Basketball Championship from June 12-18.
