Bonner honored by league
Phoenix Mercury guard/forward DeWanna Bonner was the sixth woman of the year, the league announced on Friday.
Bonner received 20 votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters to earn the award. The top three vote getters were rookies. Atlanta Dream forward Angel McCoughtry finished second with 10 votes and Detroit Shock guard Shavonte Zellous third with four votes.
"It says something special about a rookie to receive this honor and shows what confidence her coaches and teammates have in her," Mercury GM Ann Meyers Drysdale said. "She's shown the ability to come off the bench and affect the game by contributing not only offensively, but defensively as well."
Bonner led the Mercury in rebounds (5.8 a game) and was third in points (11.2). Bonner averaged more than 20 minutes a game off the bench and led all rookies in double-doubles (five).
Bonner was drafted fifth overall by the Mercury out of Auburn. As a senior, she was named the SEC player of the year. Bonner was an All-SEC first-team member three times.
