Parker, Sparks lead Week 1 power rankings

Eight games are in the books. All 14 teams have made their 2008 debuts. What sort of first impressions did they leave? Melanie Jackson, ESPN.com's women's basketball editor, checks in with Week 1 power rankings now that the WNBA's 12th season is officially under way:

1 Sparks 1-0 Do you believe the CP3 hype yet? At the risk of adding to it, can Candace Parker match Seimone Augustus' rookie season scoring mark (21.9 ppg) or Yolanda Griffith's rookie rebounding record (11.3 rpg)?
2 Sun 2-0 After the Sun nearly blew an 18-point lead Sunday, coach Mike Thibault insisted the team hasn't found its rhythm yet. But the Sun are 2-0, had 100 points Saturday for just the second regulation game in franchise history and are getting great production from Tamika Whitmore (double-double Saturday and 17 points Sunday).
3 Shock 1-1 While Candace Parker was tearing it up Saturday, former Tennessee teammate Alexis Hornbuckle's rookie debut wasn't too shabby, either, as she made a franchise-record seven steals. Sunday wasn't so pretty, however, when the Shock committed 23 turnovers in a loss against the Lynx. Minnesota looked good, but while the Sun had no trouble, the Shock struggled in their back-to-back.
4 Storm 1-0 The Storm looked like a team with a lot of new parts in the first half. But the second was exactly the sort of basketball Seattle women's hoops fans were hoping for. And despite only three days of practice with the full roster intact, the team never looked more together than right after the final whistle, when the Storm brought their four owners with them to midcourt to celebrate in a postgame huddle.
5 Mercury 0-1 Cappie Pondexter nets 32 points within 24 hours of getting off a plane from Turkey? Diana Taurasi, back from Russia for less than a week, misses her first six shots but still scores 24, while nursing a stomach virus? We know the Mercury will miss Penny Taylor, but Phoenix should be feeling good.
6 Fever 1-0 Katie Douglas scored 24 points in her first game "back home" to help usher in the Lin Dunn era with a win. But the bench was equally impressive, combining for 21 of the team's 64 points.
7 Lynx 1-0 Who would have thought the Lynx would beat East favorite Detroit on a night when Seimone Augustus shot just 6-for-14 from the field? That's because rookies Candice Wiggins (15 points), Nicky Anosike (11 points and 11 rebounds) and Charde Houston (21 points), a third-round draft pick, picked up the slack.
8 Monarchs 1-0 New faces, same old scrappy defense. Injuries and free agency helped give the Monarchs' roster a makeover during the offseason. But Sacramento displayed some incredible balance (four players in double figures and seven scoring at least six points) and received solid performances from its rookies. Now, about those 23 turnovers ...
9 Silver Stars 0-1 Of all the teams that lost during the opening weekend of play, the Silver Stars' performance was probably the most disappointing. Credit Sacramento and its revamped roster for putting together a nice win, but San Antonio shot just 4-for-19 from downtown and 32 percent from the field. Hopefully, Ann Wauters can get her passport issues settled and join the team sooner rather than later.
10 Comets 0-1 Tina Thompson could be Superwoman, but it will never be enough if the Comets continue to turn over the ball 23 times and allow 20 offensive rebounds.
11 Liberty 0-1 The Liberty had almost as many turnovers (20) as total rebounds (22). New York's press and subsequent 18-4 second-half run had Connecticut on its heels. But the league's top 3-point shooting team a year ago started 0-for-7 on 3-point attempts before finishing 5-of-17 from downtown.
12 Sky 0-1 The Sky outrebounded Seattle 40-34 for the game and led by nine points in the third quarter. But Chicago failed to hit a field goal for nearly 11 minutes in the second half and let what would have been its first victory over the Storm get away.
13 Mystics 0-1 The Mystics made just 21 field goals and shot 2-for-9 from downtown (22 percent) to fall to the Fever 64-53 -- the lowest combined point total of the weekend. Washington also committed 22 turnovers.
14 Dream 0-1 The Dream shot 28-for-71 from the field (39 percent), a woeful 3-for-13 on 3-point attempts (23 percent) and hit only half of their free throws (8-of-16). Starting guards Kristin Haynie and Betty Lennox combined for just two assists and the Dream committed 16 turnovers.
