Fever heat up top of WNBA power rankings

New month. New rankings. New No. 1.

Riding its franchise-record-tying sixth consecutive victory, Indiana supplanted Seattle for the top spot. But keep an eye on Minnesota (which continues to win despite losing its star), Atlanta (which is on the verge of setting a club record for victories) and Los Angeles (which got Candace Parker back -- in practice, at least -- on Tuesday).

A look at ESPN.com's latest WNBA power rankings, as compiled by ESPN.com women's basketball editor Melanie Jackson (through games played as of Tuesday):

1 (3) Fever 6-2 The Fever are one of five teams in the league with at least six wins, but the only one to have won all six in a row, which ties the franchise record for consecutive victories.
2 (6) Lynx 7-3 If notching three straight victories to increase their win total to a league-best seven wasn't impressive enough, the hot Lynx have accomplished the streak despite losing Seimone Augustus. Raise your hand if you thought Minnesota might slide in the other direction.
3 (1) Storm 6-3 Falling from the top spot isn't that dramatic when you consider the accomplishments ahead of them. But the Storm's 27-point loss at Los Angeles didn't help.
4 (5) Sky 6-3 Unbeaten at home (a franchise-record 5-0) and riding a three-game winning streak, the Sky won their past three games by a combined eight points.
5 (7) Sun 4-3 The Mystics are actually ahead of the Sun in the East standings, but Connecticut is heating up. The Sun have won three consecutive games and put in perhaps their best performance of the season in a rout of Atlanta on Saturday. The Sun had only 12 turnovers and are giving up a league-low 67 ppg.
6 (2) Mercury 6-4 Phoenix was 5-1 and riding a three-game win streak the last time it landed in Seattle. Since, the Mercury have lost three of four, including a 93-84 loss to the Storm on June 21. Can the Mercury turn things around upon returning to the Emerald City on Wednesday? Diana Taurasi (21.1 ppg) and Cappie Pondexter (20.4) trail only Lauren Jackson (22.8 ppg) among the league's scoring leaders.
7 (4) Mystics 5-3 As Mechelle Voepel wrote last week, the Mystics are almost all-ACCess -- as in some of the best players in ACC history have helped Washington amass a winning record. In a win over San Antonio on Tuesday, Duke grads Alana Beard and Lindsey Harding each had 19 points, with Beard hitting the game-winner on a 16-footer with 1.9 seconds left.
8 (11) Sparks 3-5 Sparks co-owner Kathy Goodman predicted her team would "kill [Seattle] at Staples Center on Sunday night!" And Los Angeles did just that. I wish my kiddo would always go out and do exactly what I promised. Still not convinced of the three-spot jump? Candace Parker returned to the team Tuesday. Now, about that 0-5 road mark?
9 (9) Silver Stars 3-4 Though the deficits are slim, the Silver Stars are getting beat in every major statistical category, from points per game to field goal percentage to rebounding. And they're one of four teams (joining Detroit, L.A. and Sacramento) that still haven't won on the road this season.
10 (8) Dream 4-6 In their inaugural season last summer, the Dream won a total of four games. That franchise-record fifth victory didn't happen in a home loss to Minnesota on Tuesday, but might be on the horizon: Atlanta hosts Washington on Friday, plays at Indiana on Sunday and hosts Connecticut on Tuesday.
11 (12) Shock 2-5 If I were going to use Michael Jackson songs to write the power rankings, this is where "Remember the Time" would apply. Because it sure it feels like a long time since the Shock hoisted the 2008 trophy. How much impact can Kara Braxton have now that she has returned from her six-game suspension?
12 (10) Liberty 2-6 The Liberty are mired in a three-game skid. But after hosting Detroit on Thursday, New York doesn't play again for seven days -- and seven of its nine games in July are at home.
13 (13) Monarchs 1-8 Moonwalking back to Michael Jackson, one can't help humming "Bad" here. Yes, the Monarchs are just coming together, and they've only had everyone back for three games. But they've lost six straight (and are 0-6 on the road) for the league's worst mark.
