Fever still the 1 in WNBA power rankings
Phoenix and Atlanta are up. Connecticut is down. And Indiana remains on top of ESPN.com's latest WNBA power rankings, as compiled by ESPN.com women's basketball editor Melanie Jackson (through games played as of Thursday):
| 2009 Power Rankings: Week 5 | ||||
| RANK(LW) | TEAM | RECORD | COMMENT | |
![]() |
1 (1) | Fever | 8-2 | The Fever are giving up a league-low 69.6 points per game. But their franchise-record eight-game winning streak is on the line Friday at Chicago, which is 6-6 overall but a perfect 5-0 at home. |

2 (6) | Mercury | 9-4 | A league-best 91.6 points per game -- the WNBA's next-best offense is averaging 6.8 fewer ppg -- have helped the Mercury to a three-game winning streak and the Western Conference lead. |

3 (3) | Storm | 8-4 | Welcome back to the elite, Swin Cash. The Storm, who have gotten 18 points from Cash in back-to-back wins, beat Sacramento on Thursday to move into a tie for second place in the West with Minnesota. |

4 (2) | Lynx | 8-4 | Rookie Renee Montgomery reminded everybody how valuable she is and what an immediate impact she can have when she scored 16 of her season-high 21 points in the final two minutes and the extra period of Minnesota's 96-94 overtime victory against Washington on Tuesday. |

5 (4) | Sky | 6-6 | Sorry, East fans. But when only one of the division's seven teams has a winning record, and two are sporting losing streaks -- the Sky have dropped three straight while Washington has lost two in a row -- you can't be surprised to see three West teams ahead of you. |
![]() |
6 (10) | Dream | 6-7 | The Dream are 3-3 in their past six games. Chamique Holdsclaw was the team's top scorer in the wins; someone else led Atlanta in scoring in the losses. Starting Saturday, the Dream hit the road for five consecutive games. |

7 (8) | Sparks | 4-6 | We knew the Sparks would win on the road eventually. We just didn't think it'd take this long (or just happen to coincide with Candace Parker's first away contest). |
![]() |
8 (7) | Mystics | 5-5 | The Mystics are coming off back-to-back road losses, but play their next six games at home. First up: Marissa Coleman versus Candace Parker at Verizon Center. |
![]() |
9 (5) | Sun | 5-5 | Can Sandrine Gruda be the savior the Sun need? She has 32 points and 12 rebounds in two games so far, including one victory. |
![]() |
10 (9) | Silver Stars | 4-5 | Think No. 10 is a bad fit for the Silver Stars? Here's one that's even worse: 17. As in San Antonio mustered just 17 rebounds (to the Storm's 41) in a loss at Seattle on Tuesday. |
![]() |
11 (13) | Monarchs | 3-9 | Something we learned in Mechelle Voepel's column on Sacramento: Considering their injuries, Nicole Powell and the Monarchs weren't that surprised by their woeful start. Something we were reminded of: Powell is a great quote. |
![]() |
12 (12) | Liberty | 3-7 | Thursday's loss marked the team's fourth defeat in five games. One bright spot: Shameka Christon ranks fourth in the league in scoring at 18.4 points per game. |

13 (11) | Shock | 2-7 | Lin Dunn deserves to coach the WNBA All-Star Game anyway. |
