Holdsclaw, Leslie power Sparks to sixth straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chamique Holdsclaw scored 20 points to lead the Los Angeles Sparks over the Houston Comets 75-55 on Wednesday night.

Lisa Leslie added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Mwadi Mabika had 13 points for the Sparks (9-3), who used their sixth consecutive win -- all at home -- to stretch their lead to 1½ games ahead of Houston in the Western Conference.

"She's getting in game shape and she's able to take the game over as needed," Sparks coach Joe Bryant said of Holdsclaw.

Tina Thompson scored 13 points for the Comets (8-5), who've lost three of their last five. Michelle Snow added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Sheryl Swoopes had 11 points.

The Sparks used an 11-0 run to take a 32-22 lead with 4:01 left in the second quarter.

The Comets closed the gap to 36-32 in the third quarter, but Jessica Moore scored four points during an 8-0 spurt that gave Los Angeles a 44-32 lead with 5:07 left.

A 12-5 run stretched their lead to 64-45 with 7:30 to play.

"It looks like to me that the Sparks are the best team in the league right now," Comets coach Van Chancellor said. "They were on fire tonight. You can't turn the ball over like we did tonight and expect to win."

Houston had season lows in points scored and 3-point shooting (.091). They tied a season high with 23 turnovers, which the Sparks used to score 28 points.

Los Angeles point guard Temeka Johnson, who played in 10 of the Sparks' first 13 games, missed Wednesday night's contest after suffering a concussion Sunday night against Sacramento.
