MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota rookie Seimone Augustus tied a career high with 32 points and led a fourth-quarter charge as the Lynx snapped the San Antonio Silver Stars' four-game winning streak with an 85-80 comeback victory on Sunday.
Augustus scored 13 points, and reserve center Vanessa Hayden added seven in the final quarter as the Lynx erased a 12-point deficit and improved to 2-1 against San Antonio this season. Minnesota came into the game 0-10 when trailing after three quarters, and the Lynx lost by 30 points the last time they faced the Silver Stars. "The energy level was different on this team," Augustus said. "Other games we didn't have that momentum, that energy. We didn't match that other team's aggression. This time we came in with the right attitude and mind-set and I think Vanessa was key to that." Lynx coach Suzie McConnell Serio agreed that Hayden's contributions played a huge role in stemming the tide. "Vanessa was a difference-maker," McConnell Serio said. "She is a comedian off the court with this team, and is a player this team will respond to, good or bad. Tonight, it was great what she brought to this team." While Hayden led in hustle, Augustus led Minnesota in scoring for the fourth straight game. She made 9-of-20 shots and went 14 of 15 from the free throw line. Nicole Ohlde added 14 for the Lynx, and Amber Jacobs chipped in 11. Augustus, selected to the West All-Star team on Saturday, went into attack mode in the fourth quarter. She got to the foul line 10 times in the period and made two of three attempts from the floor. "It felt like they were in a push situation," Augustus said. "They started to get away from some of the things they did early to gain the lead on us. Once you feel that from the other team, it's easier for you to come down and execute." Shannon Johnson scored 20 points to lead the Silver Stars, who were outscored 15-4 in the final 3:54 and lost for the first time since June 27. Agnieszka Bibrzycka added 19 points, and Vickie Johnson had 12. After trailing by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, Minnesota got within 12 on Megan Duffy's jump shot that beat the buzzer. San Antonio got the lead up to 13 with 8:23 to play, but then the Lynx took over. Minnesota outscored the Silver Stars 22-5 over the next 7:30, taking the lead for good when Augustus made a pair of free throws with 1:15 to play. "I thought the Lynx owned the fourth quarter," San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said. "We just had a hard time keeping them off the foul line. Then I thought we got a little stagnant in there. Augustus is a hard guard, especially when she gets to the line 15 times." The Lynx didn't only dominate at the line they also finished with a 40-22 advantage in the paint. "That's the key to win the game, to be more aggressive under the basket," Bibrzycka said. "We played great for 30 minutes. The last quarter we didn't compete well. I think we gave up for a second and that was the moment when Minnesota started playing really well." Neither team led by more than five points in the first half as they spent most of the time exchanging the lead. San Antonio had the biggest run, going on a pair of 6-0 spurts in the second quarter. The second run gave the Silver Stars a 42-37 lead going into halftime.Copyright by STATS LLC and The Associated Press
