Sun remain unbeaten in Chicago as Sky fall just short of second win

CHICAGO (AP) -- Tamika Whitmore and Lindsay Whalen scored 19 points apiece to help the Connecticut Sun edge the Chicago Sky 75-73 Sunday.

Jia Perkins scored a game-high 21 points but missed a 12-foot baseline jumper over Connecticut's Jones at the buzzer as the Sun (5-1) improved to 7-1 against the third-year Sky, including 5-0 at Chicago.

"There's a lot of things we can get better at a few execution things down the stretch, but this was a huge win for us," said Whalen, who pulled with one of tying Nykesha Sales (683) for second all-time on the Sun's career assists list.

Barbara Turner scored 11 of her 13 in the third quarter and rookie Amber Holt added 11 points for Connecticut, which is 2-0 away from Mohegan Sun Arena.

"It's important to protect home, but if you can be above .500 on the road it's big," Whitmore said after tying a season high for scoring with 7-for-15 shooting from the field, including 3-for-7 on 3-pointers.

Chicago rookie Sylvia Fowles posted her second consecutive double-double with season highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Candice Dupree also had a double-double for the Sky (1-3) with 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds.

Dominique Canty and Armintie Price combined for five points on 1-for-15 shooting as the Sky shot less that 44 percent (43.1) for the third time this season.

"The one thing that changed between Thursday's game [75-69 loss to Minnesota] we had much better energy, which was good," Chicago coach Steven Key said. "But the one thing that also carried over from last game to this game was the poor shooting."

Fowles cut the deficit to 71-68, but committed a foul on the other end and Whalen split two free throws with 1:06 left.

Whalen fouled Perkins on a 3-pointer with 49.7 seconds left, and the Chicago guard hit 2 of 3. Whitmore missed a 3, but Turner picked up the rebound and found Whalen, who was fouled and hit both free throws to put Connecticut up 74-70 with 24.1 seconds left.

Perkins missed a 3, but the Sky picked up the rebound and Cathy Joens, who scored 13, hit a 3 from the left wing with 6.0 seconds left. Fowles rebounded a free-throw miss from Whalen with 5.4 seconds left, setting up Chicago's final play.
